JaneCrowther Web 1University Centre St Helens and St Helens College students enjoyed a guest lecture this week from expert in luxury branded paper supplies, Jane T Crowther.

Jane, a leading Sales Executive at G F Smith & Son Limited, provided students with insight into her 20 years’ experience in the industry, explaining how she is responsible for both supplying and advising designers nationally with luxury branded paper.

With a team of six expert advisers, Jane works with a range of organisations, agencies and designers across the UK and took time out of her busy schedule to speak to students about the environmental sustainability of paper, production techniques on papers including printing, spot printing, hot foils, emboss, die cut, the value of paper in marketing propositions/brand differentiation and the long history of paper production, explaining how the production process works and the science behind it, as well as dispelling common myths around the production process.

Speaking about the presentation, Lecturer, Damyon Garrity said:

“I am delighted Jane was able to attend today, to speak to a wide range of students. Her wealth of knowledge and direct experience of working with graphic designers, as well as her passion for paper really shone and enthused students with knowledge that they can apply to their own design work.”

Final year University Centre St Helens BA (Hons) Graphic Design student, Ella, enjoyed the presentation and added:

“I really enjoyed today’s presentation from Jane, it was an interesting talk which engaged all of the students and gave us an insight in to the world of paper. I got to speak to Jane after the presentation and she was very helpful, she provided me with advice on a project that I am working on, which involves paper designs. She’s even sending over some samples for me to work with!”

The students, ranging from first year students on the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Graphic Design to final year students on the BA (Hons) Graphic Design degree programme were able to hear from Jane as part of the new outreach programme for the Liverpool City Region, Shaping Futures; a formation of 12 local Higher Education providers, delivering programmes of activity designed to raise aspirations and support local 14-18 year olds in fulfilling their educational potential.
