Ellis WebGraphic design student and aspiring freelance designer, Ellis, was the recent winner of University Centre St Helens’ corporate Christmas card competition, which required her to design a Christmas card representative of the wider SK College Group. Having received some fantastic submissions from Graphic Design students, Ellis’s entry was chosen to represent the College Group, being produced as a printed card as well as electronically.

Wanting the card to be representative of the communities that SK College Group serves and incorporating elements of her current work, Ellis decided on a photomosaic and set out photographing areas of interest in St Helens Town Centre, Huyton, Prescot and Liverpool City Centre, with the centre piece of the design being the iconic Christmas Tree in Liverpool One – the largest Christmas tree in Europe.

Ellis, aged 20, joined the BA (Hons) Graphic Design degree with University Centre St Helens from The Belvedere Academy in Liverpool and upon graduating, has aspirations to become a Graphic Design Teacher in a Secondary School, inspiring others to learn from her passion for the subject.

Speaking about her decision to join the Graphic Design degree, Ellis said “I choose to study at University Centre St Helens because in comparison to the larger universities, the class sizes here are smaller. I instantly preferred this, as I felt this would give my university experience a much more personal touch as I could interact with the lecturers a lot more. I chose to study Graphic Design as I studied it at GCSE and continued onto A Level, where I completely fell in love with the subject. Since joining the degree I have had so many fantastic opportunities to work on projects with both external and internal organisations, which has helped me to build my work portfolio and experience working on live briefs and deadlines.” Continuing, Ellis said “The degree has some fantastic employer links, which allow us to not only work on live briefs but also benefit from guest speakers and professional presentations. In addition, the lecturing team are very supportive and go above and beyond to help you achieve.”

Ellis’ festive card will be distributed to key stakeholder’s including, staff, students, employers, local MPs and councillors.
