Picture of Steve Riley, senior lecturer in the School of Forensic and Investigative Science at the University of Central Lancashire

Our BA Criminal Justice students welcomed Steve Riley, senior lecturer in the School of Forensic and Investigative Science at the University of Central Lancashire, to campus to deliver an insightful session on police culture.

Steve served as a police officer with Merseyside police for 30 years, from 1979 to 2009, where most of his time was spent in investigative based roles. He has since moved into education and training, delivering investigative training programmes in Hungary, Turkey and Serbia. His current role as a lecturer at UCLAN is primarily based with policing programmes, in conjunction with Lancashire Constabulary.

During the session, students benefitted from a unique insight into police culture and how this can be related to relevant historical and contemporary theories. The session raised key issues relating to racism, sexism and how institutions such as the police create norms and values within police culture. Steve also highlighted recent examples of crises within the police that have affected public attitudes towards the institution.
