"The courses are so unique in the way that they strip you bare. Once you step inside the kitchen, you become a Chef and part of a family."

KyleCatering alumnus, Kyle, heads for success, after securing a highly sought after role as Commis Chef at Chef Patron, Paul Askew’s, exclusive fine dining restaurant, The Art School.

The fast-paced, ‘make or break’ nature of the industry has always fascinated Kyle. The exhilaration and electric atmosphere that sparks from working amongst a “brigade of chefs”, is what drives his passion and discipline to succeed.

This determination led to Kyle acquiring his first role at a young age, at a local Italian restaurant, Ariette, based in Newton-le-Willows, where he quickly worked his way up to an impressive Maître d' role as Head Waiter.

After completing his GCSEs at Hope Academy, Kyle joined St Helens College, where he was able to progress from the level 1 Diploma in Professional Cookery through to the level 3 Advanced Diploma.

Speaking about his time at College, Kyle said, “Starting on the level 1 course at St Helens College was definitely the right route for me - it gave me a great introduction to the industry. The courses are so unique in the way that they strip you bare; it doesn’t matter what background you have or where you come from, once you step inside the kitchen, you become a Chef and you become part of a family.”

Alongside his studies, Kyle developed his experience in the busy kitchens at St Helens College’s award-winning restaurant, Colours, working 7 days a week, prepping menus for dinner service and exclusive events.

Speaking of his time at Colours, Kyle added, “I loved being able to learn and work in the Colours restaurant, not only working with their original French art nouvelle cuisine but experimenting with flavours and dishes, such as Moroccan style cuisine and Palestinian food.”

Always keen to work with a variation of people, work ethics and cooking styles, Kyle has had the unique opportunity as part of his level 3 course, to work with a number of local organisations and top chefs in the industry including; The Pig Hotel, Knowsley Hall, Anfield Football Club, The Shankly Hotel in Liverpool and renowned Chef, James Golding.

Kyle spoke highly of his time at College, adding, "At College, I have had some amazing opportunities to work with top chefs in the industry and experience energetic and vibrant kitchens in a variety of locations across the UK. The support and direction from the Chef's at College, has prepared me for my exciting new role at an exclusive fine dining restaurant, The Art School."

Since beginning his role at The Art School, Kyle has settled in quickly, embracing the energetic atmosphere in the kitchens. He plays a pivotal role in the larder section in the main kitchen, cooking and plating up delicious starters, canapés and the first four courses of the tasting menu.

Speaking about his exciting role at The Art School, Kyle said, “I use each day as an opportunity to learn something new and to be better than the day before and I’m in the perfect place to do so. I am working under great mentors and a part of a hard-working team. Working so hard throughout College is all paying off now!”

Determined to make his mark on an industry that he “lives and breathes,” Kyle hopes to extend his skills and experience across a range of industry roles, gaining him the expertise and knowledge needed to one day run his own kitchen.
