Gemma Lasikiewicz

CIPD level 3 Foundation Certificate in Human Resource Management

Gemma Lasikiewicz, 26, progressed on to the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) level 5 Intermediate Diploma at University Centre St Helens after successfully completing the CIPD level 3 certificate in Human Resource management at St Helens College.

The former Cowley International College student, from Eccleston, works as a HR administrator for Wincanton and Co-operative based in Lea Green.

Before starting her role at Wincanton Gemma studied for a degree in Web Systems Development at Edge Hill University. After graduating Gemma admits she found it hard to find a job in her degree specialism and applied for basic administration roles to keep expanding her knowledge whilst searching for a more suited role. It was during this time that Gemma branched into HR and she hasn’t looked back since. She said, “I really enjoyed the HR side of my job and knew that I wanted to progress myself further in this field'. Gemma first heard about the CIPD course from her supervisor who at the time was studying her level 7 qualification at the college.

Although she had previously studied at a higher level before she admits she was nervous at the thought of going back to education, “I was nervous to go back to college and education but my course tutor, Alana made me feel welcome and supported me throughout the duration of my course”.

“Alana was very friendly and approachable. She was always there to guide us and support us with assignments and extra learning”

Three years into her employment at Wincanton, Gemma is now currently responsible for monitoring over 500 staff, including 400 drivers in all aspects of Human Resources including disciplinarians, grievances, flexible working requests, welfare, sickness and payroll.

Speaking about the CIPD Level 3 course, Gemma said, “Choosing to study the CIPD level 3 qualification has allowed me to enhance my career prospects by becoming qualified and experienced in an area that requires both hands-on and academic knowledge. The Qualification and experience has allowed me to become a well-rounded HR professional.

“I would highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to gain a sound understanding of Human Resources”.

While studying on her Level 3, Gemma was nominated and awarded the CIPD student of the year for all her hard efforts. After completing her level 5 qualification Gemma hopes to work her way up to a higher level position as a HR advisor or officer and eventually moving on to complete her level 7 qualification.
