Picture of our student, IanSport student, Ian, has gained a placement with Saints Community Development Foundation thanks to his course at St Helens College.

Ian, 17, from Sutton, is currently studying a level 2 Activity Leadership course and joined the College from Sutton Academy after a friend recommended the course to him because of the enthusiastic and friendly teaching team.

It was thanks to the links that his course and tutors have with giant rugby team Saints, that Ian managed to secure a coaching role running fitness sessions for children aged 4 to 14. Ian says, “The College helped me to secure the placement. I really enjoy working with the children and putting the skills and knowledge that I have gained on my course into practice in a practical, real work setting.”

Ian’s favourite sport is rugby and alongside College and his voluntary role with Saints, he also plays on the wing for local team, Thatto Heath Crusaders. Ian credits his college course with his development both academically and as a sportsman. He added, “I would recommend for anyone considering a career in sport to do this course. You learn a lot and it has helped to equip me with communication skills as well as teaching me different ways of coaching. My favourite part of this course is working practically with others – we have been going into a local primary school to deliver sessions in basketball, rugby and football.”

Upon completion of his course, Ian hopes to progress onto a coaching or personal training apprenticeship.
