Hair and Beauty students took part in a comprehensive demonstration headed by accomplished Make-Up Artist Samantha Helen at St Helens College. The session was a detailed breakdown of body paint and theatrical makeup techniques with an exciting Halloween theme.

Samantha delivered an intense practical session, giving the students some hands-on experience and expanding their transferrable skills. The session encompassed a wide range of techniques, discussing brands and the range of tools available to students and how to apply them successfully, as well as a masterclass in being proactive and seeking out lucrative business opportunities in unlikely places. The students also received an important lesson on how fame does not always equal financial success.

Having had an unconventional and inspiring journey to the top of the make-up and body painting industry, Samantha encouraged the students to think carefully about their goals and aspirations, reflecting on the power of influencers and social media and how the face of the industry continues to rapidly change. Samantha drew upon her own experiences and weaved a truly inspiring story, proving that artists like her can progress from humble beginnings to become a giant of the cosmetics world, having recently created her own brand of body paints and cosmetics used by the students during today’s demonstration.

“I had the pleasure of visiting St Helens College to introduce them to the weird and wonderful world of creative makeup,” says Samantha following the session. “It was a really fantastic day with the students getting stuck right into the body art. From delicate flowers to gory cuts, the session explored all angles of the body paint industry. It was great to see the creativity of the students and I look forward to seeing how they used their new skills in their course! Thanks so much for having me.”

The students had a brilliant time too; we caught up with student Bobby Jay after the session, who told us “it was lovely to meet Sam and she is fab at what she does. She showed us some fab techniques, and gave us some really good ideas to use with the different brushes. I shall have a practice in college and over the weekend!”

Well done to all our students and a huge thank you to Samantha for sharing her knowledge and expertise!
