Our Public and Uniformed Services Department recently welcomed officers from the Duke of Lancaster Regiment, who visited the College to complete a field radio exercise with our Public and Uniformed Services students, giving them a taste of life in the British Army!

Members of the Regiment, including Sergeant Peter Davies, arrived on campus in their impressive Land Rover Defender vehicle, equipped with specialist radio communications equipment, which the students later got a tour of.

In the classroom, the students were taught how to assemble a field radio, and were given a lesson on concise radio communication, including how to use and recognise callsigns, which are codenames given to an individual or group. This technique is commonly used in the British Army as a way to recognise groups and individuals quickly without using their real names, which is especially useful in harsh conditions or when there is a need to be discreet.

The students were then split up into teams, where they were tasked with callsigns and messages they needed to send via their radio using the correct communication procedures they learned during the session.

The officers also expanded on the equipment available to military personnel, describing how far technology had advanced since they began their military careers. With the ability to send and receive messages going further than ever before, the threat of interception by the enemy is a possibility that must be carefully considered, which is one of the most important reasons to keep radio communications brief and to the point.

To close the session, the students then had the opportunity to explore the military vehicle, before taking part in a field exercise where they put the knowledge they’d learnt during the session into practice, relaying messages to each team and working as a cohesive unit.

A big thank you to Sergeant Davies and the Duke of Lancaster Regiment for devoting their time to educating and inspiring our students.
