Level 2 Certificate in introduction to the role of the professional Taxi and Private Hire Driver

This course is specifically designed for people who are looking to start a new career in Taxi driving or are experienced drivers who wish to update their current skills.

The Northern Logistics Academy is a logistics and transport training specialist, based in the Northwest of England, delivering sector specific training and qualifications.

If you want to become a Taxi Driver, it is a mandatory requirement to complete your level 2 certificate training in order to gain your license.

This course is designed to develop, support and enhance the knowledge of prospective or existing drivers who wish to begin, or develop a career in transporting passengers. It will guarantee that as Taxi Driver, you will have a solid understanding of the key areas and practical skills in the taxi trade.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course has various delivery dates throughout the year. The course takes 6 days to complete with 7 hours of learning per day.

This course will be delivered at Northern Logistics Academy's dedicated training centre in St Helens (Langtree Street, St Helens WA9 1AR).

What will I study?

A Taxi Drivers job isn't just about driving the vehicle, although an essential part, those in the trade need to have the right skills to avoid risks, approach a wide range of issues with confidence and understanding, and provide an excellent standard of customer service.

This course will cover the following units:

  • Health and safety in the taxi and private hire work environment: Gain an understanding of health and safety in the work environment of the taxi and private hire driver. You will learn how to meet the duty of care towards customers following a vehicle breakdown or other incidents.

  • Road safety when driving passengers in a taxi or private hire vehicle: You will develop a strong understanding of factors that can affect a driver's judgement and concentration and identify how driving styles can affect safety, vehicle efficiency, the environment and customer comfort.

  • Professional customer service in the taxi and private hire industry: Taxi drivers have a duty to ensure that they provide the highest level of professional customer service. This unit illustrates the importance of providing a professional service in a competitive transport market.

  • Taxi and private hire vehicle maintenance and safety inspections: Understand how to maintain a taxi or private hire vehicle to a legal standard for the safe transport of fare-paying passengers.

  • The regulatory framework of the taxi and private hire industry: The taxi and private hire industry is highly regulated; and safety and security of customers is paramount. You will understand why drivers, vehicles and operators are required to be licensed; the types of licenses available; how to apply for a license and the requirements needed to hold and retain a license to drive and work within the industry.

  • Taxi and private hire services for passengers who require assistance: Understand the importance for Taxi Drivers to be mindful of passengers who may need extra help, how to best provide that extra help, and the legislation and training in place to help ensure they get it.

  • Routes and fares in the taxi and private hire vehicle industries: Providing a safe, legal, effective and profitable service as a taxi or private hire driver you will need to know how to map read and navigate; the rules, restrictions and safety measures for picking up passengers; and how to accurately charge for services.

  • Transporting of parcels, luggage and other items in the taxi and private hire industries: Understand how to transport parcels, luggage and other items and the regulations that drivers need to follow when transporting.

  • Transporting of children and young persons by taxi or private hire vehicle: you will learn the standards for vehicles, vehicle safety and vehicle checking also looking at the seat belt law and the driver's responsibilities in relation to children's age and height.

How is it assessed?

Upon completion of all units you are required to sit an online multiple choice assessment, unit 6 also requires an observation based assessment. You will be fully supported by your tutor.

Please note that the assessment at the end of this course is in English.

If English is your second language, you may need some support to get the best out of attending this course. The College can help you by assessing your current language skills, to help understand what support, if any, you may need ahead of your attendance on the Taxi VRQ course. This assessment will take place at the College by a qualified course tutor, before the course start date.

If appropriate, we may recommend your attendance on an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) course. Our ESOL courses help provide a pathway to a wide range of courses, including Taxi VRQ. ESOL courses are a great way to develop English speaking and listening, reading and writing, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation to help with communication in everyday life, education and work.

On the day of your course, you must bring at least one of the below items as identification:

  • a photo card driving license
  • a valid passport

What are the course fees?

The total cost of this course is £190 per person.

You may be eligible to get up to 100% of your course fees covered if you are in receipt of a qualifying benefit including for example, Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) or Employment Support Allowance (ESA). If you are aged 19 - 23 and this is your first full level 2 qualification, 100% of your course fees will be covered. More information can be provided upon application.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive your level 2 Driver qualification which will allow you to gain your Taxi Driver License.
