A level Politics

This A level forms part of the Law Enforcement and Government Professional Programme, incorporating A level Law and Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Public Services.

Delivered at the A Level Academy, you will explore the latest issues highlighted in the media such as the presidency of Donald Trump, Brexit, the health service and education including government operations, how political systems influence our daily lives, ideologies that have shaped our society and the national and international impacts of social policy.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

All A level study begins in September and will take two years to complete.

What will I study?

During this A level, you will focus on the politics of modern Britain, the USA and the ideologies which have shaped them.

You will cover the following themes:

  • The structure of the British and US political systems and where the balance of power lies.
  • The nature of the UK and US constitutions and the pressures upon them.
  • Comparing the political powers of the US President and UK Prime Minister.
  • How political parties and pressure groups operate.
  • The development of political ideologies and ideas.
  • How ideologies have shaped western society.
  • Why ideologies and civilisations collide.

In addition to this, you will also cover a broad range of A level Law and level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Public Services topics from the legal system, how laws are made and criminal law to government policies, citizenship, leadership and diversity in the public services.

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed by written examinations and a range of practical and written work, including both internal and external assessments.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and maths.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2017), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. For more information, please click here.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Once you have successfully completed the Law Enforcement and Government Professional Programme, you will have the opportunity to progress onto university, a higher apprenticeship and a career in the industry.

This Programme could lead to a wide range of careers such as a Border Control Officer, Policy Adviser, Civil Servant, Armed Forces Personnel or Researcher.
