Tasty Tapas

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

Whether you are an amateur cook or a food lover, this fascinating one day course will provide you with a selection of Spanish tapas recipes.

The course allows participants to develop their culinary skills by experimenting with fresh local produce and exploring quick and versatile methods to cook mouth-watering tapas dishes. You will develop an understanding of how to prepare and cook foods using a variety of techniques in creating, balance, texture and taste.

You will be taught alongside likeminded people by passionate chefs with significant experience.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course is due to start on Thursday 20th June 2024. You will attend college on Thursday evening from 6.00pm - 9.00pm, for one week.

The course takes place at St Helens College, Town Centre Campus, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

What will I study?

The cookery course will allow you to explore various ingredients, develop the basic craft skills of tapas cookery and encourage you to develop your own creative culinary ideas, whilst using quality ingredients.

You will be presented with a range of recipes and some of the dishes may include:

  • Ham and cheese croquettes
  • Spanish tortilla
  • Seafood paella

Course participants will be able to develop their awareness of Health and Safety relating to the preparation of food, food safety awareness, practical knife skills and stove control, whilst learning logical and coherent methods for producing tapas dishes.

How is it assessed?

There is no formal assessment. You will be given feedback based on your progress with suggestions and guidance for areas for improvement.

As with all our leisure courses the main emphasis is to come and enjoy!

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

There are no formal entry requirements.

You will need to wear strong, flat sensible shoes and bring along an apron, tea towel, and an oven glove.

Please bring along a container to take what you have made home with you.

What are the course fees?

You may be eligible for Community Learning funding if you have not recently participated in a similar Community Learning programme, or received any other recent government funded training.

There are a number of fee options for this course including:

  • If you are unemployed - FREE
  • If you are employed - £40

The course price is inclusive of all of the ingredients that you will need for each session.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

You may wish to progress onto an accredited qualification in this subject, which will allow you to practice your skills in the industry.
