Jessica, 27, secured her dream position with St Helens College as an Apprentice Animal Care Technician, fulfilling her childhood goal of working with animals.
Based at St Helens College’s STEM Centre Campus within the animal unit, Jessica is responsible for the daily care and enrichment of all the animals. In her role, she ensures the animals are in good health and supervises the students when handling and feeding.
Before starting her apprenticeship, Jessica worked in the catering industry for many years and despite always knowing that she wanted a career working with animals, she felt a “little daunted” by the prospect of going back to college full-time to achieve a qualification”.

Jessica spent months researching the right course and decided to attend an enrolment event at the College. She fell in love with the animal management department and shortly after applying, Jessica received a phone call from the Business Development Team offering her the opportunity to complete an animal care technician apprenticeship at the College.

Upon completion of her level 2 apprenticeship, Jessica hopes to secure a full-time position in her current role and continue to progress on to the next level of her apprenticeship. When asked what advice Jessica would provide to someone considering an apprenticeship, she said:
