Level 2 Certificate in Practical Animal Care Skills

Do you have a passion for animals and are thinking about making a career out of it? This course is a great next step!

You will gain hands-on experience in our indoor and animal units, working with a wide variety of species, from reptiles and birds to exotic mammals.

This will provide you with the confidence, knowledge and experience needed to secure employment within the growing sector.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

This course will take place at our STEM Centre Campus, Pocket Nook Street, St Helens, WA9 1TT.

What will I study?

During this one year course, you will gain an understanding of the various aspects of animal management through a number of units such as:

  • Animal health and wellbeing
  • Preparing and maintaining animal accommodation
  • Preparing and providing animal food
  • Health and safety

You will also undertake a work experience placement alongside your studies.

How is it assessed?

During this course, you will be assessed by completed workbooks and practical assessments.

Tutors will also support you to find and complete work experience, which will enhance your CV and boost your employability skills.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have three GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English or maths, and preferably a minimum of three days voluntary experience within the animal sector.

Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. If you achieve below a grade 4 in your English and/or maths GCSEs at school, you will study it alongside your chosen course when you join us.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2024), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

This course will provide you with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to gain employment within the industry.

You'll also have the opportunity to enhance your knowledge and skills, preparing you for a higher level role in the industry, by progressing on to the level 2 Technical Certificate in Animal Care.
