Opportunity knocks for our Mechanical Engineering alumnus, Antony, who has worked extremely hard to progress his way from the Level 3 Mechanical Engineering course at St Helens College, on to the HNC Engineering qualification at University Centre St Helens. He has since secured his place at the University of Chester to undertake the (BEng) Mechanical Engineering and has completed his first year of study.

The aspiring Product Design Engineer, joined St Helens College after moving to the UK from Sri Lanka in 2016. Having always had an enjoyment for creating his own inventions since a young age, Antony competed in various junior competitions, where his talents have taken him across the globe to as far as Sydney, Australia.

Antony’s strong work ethic and clear passion for the industry, saw him excel on both the Level 3 Engineering Technologies - Mechanical Engineering course and HNC Engineering qualification, which gave him the opportunity to fast track his way on to the second year of the (BEng) Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Chester. Despite this well-earned advantage, Antony wanted the full university experience and chose to start his degree from the very beginning, at year one, giving him the chance to strengthen his English language skills in the process.

Speaking to Antony about his time at university, he commented, “So far I have really enjoyed seeing my work come to life, whilst learning about advanced design techniques, and having the opportunity to create my own parts using 3D printers!”

He added, “My time at St Helens College has definitely given me an advantage at university, particularly in thermodynamics and CAD designing modules. I received great support from the tutors, who helped me to achieve my goals, and I loved being able to spend time developing my experience and getting hands-on with the machines in the engineering workshops.”

Antony is currently exploring his future options and is hoping to progress on to a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering after achieving his degree.

Follow in Antony’s footsteps and explore our wide range of engineering courses, which could lead to an apprenticeship, on to university and into a career in the industry.
