Step Into Employment: Childcare Settings

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

'Do Something Big' and start your journey towards a career in early years childcare!

Working in early years is a highly rewarding career, giving you the opportunity to help to shape a child's future and watch them grow, learn and flourish!

There are lots of different types of roles in a variety of childcare environments, plus early years is a growth sector and qualified workers are in high demand.

This course is designed to give you a glimpse into employment in this sector and provide you with an understanding of the skills and knowledge needed to care for young children.

The course also includes elements of literacy and numeracy, designed to help early years workers within their job roles and to best support childrens' learning and development.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course starts on Monday 17th June 2024 and will take 2 weeks to complete.

You will attend our Town Centre Campus, Monday to Friday, 9.30am - 4.00pm.

What will I study?

You will study the following modules.

Caring for Children:

  • Growth and development of young children
  • Practical Health and Safety when with young children
  • Listening to and talking with a young child
  • Understanding learning and development through play

English:

  • Reading social policy
  • Writing for practice
  • The basics of child language acquisition

Maths:

  • Budgeting and costing in childcare
  • Ratio, measuring and proportion in childcare
  • Shape in childcare
  • Averages in childcare

How is it assessed?

You will build a portfolio of work throughout the course which will be assessed.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

No previous qualifications are required to complete this course.

What are the course fees?

The total cost of this course is £225. You may be eligible for funding depending on your personal circumstances and subject to a fee assessment during the enrolment process. For further details, please visit our financial support pages.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

After you have completed this course you will receive a Level 1 Award in Caring for Children, accredited by NCFE CACHE. You may choose to progress on to the Level 2 Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner to become qualified as a fully licenced Early Years Practitioner.

Once you are fully qualified you could work in a range of rewarding childcare environments including:

  • Nurseries
  • Pre-Schools or Nursery Schools
  • Before or After School Clubs
  • Childminding
