Level 2 Certificate in Automotive Maintenance

Throughout this course, you will develop your technical ability and skills on innovative cars, while learning everything you need to know about light vehicles including chassis, transmission, engines and related systems.

You will fix faults using computerised diagnostic tools and industry standard equipment and will also use fabrication tools.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

This course will take place at our STEM Centre Campus, Pocket Nook Street, St Helens, WA9 1TT.

What will I study?

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Health, safety and good housekeeping in the automotive environment
  • Support for Job Roles in the Automotive Environment
  • Materials, Fabrication, Tools and Measuring Devices used in the Automotive Environment
  • Plan, Prepare, Carry Out and Report on Routine Light Vehicle Maintenance
  • Remove and Replace Light Vehicle Engine Mechanical and Lubrication System Units and Components
  • Remove and Replace Light Vehicle Heating and Cooling System Units and Components
  • Remove and Replace Light Vehicle Fuel, Ignition, Air and Exhaust System Units and Components
  • Remove and Replace Light Vehicle Electrical Units and Components
  • Remove and Replace Light Vehicle Chassis Units and Components
  • Knowledge of Removing and Replacing Light Vehicle Transmission and Driveline Units and Components
  • We will also support you to find work experience within local automotive companies.

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed by assignments, completion of module packs, online exams, workshop practical assessments and an e-portfolio submission.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have successfully completed a level 1 Motor Vehicle qualification.

Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. If you achieve below a grade 4 in your English and/or maths GCSEs at school, you will study it alongside your chosen course when you join us.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2024), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Upon completion of this course, you may wish to enter the automotive industry and gain employment as a technician and work your way up to Garage Manager.

Alternatively, you may choose to complete an apprenticeship to earn while you learn.
