Level 1 Diploma in Automotive Maintenance (Adult Course)

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

This course is a great introduction to the automotive industry, where you will develop a strong foundation of skills and knowledge to enable you to progress on to the next level of study.

Using a variety of tools and equipment in our Automotive Hub, you will discover how spark and compression ignition engines work, explore lubrication, steering, braking and suspensions while gaining an understanding of electrical systems.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

This course will take place at our STEM Centre Campus, St Helens, WA9 1TT.

What will I study?

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Health and safety
  • Tools and equipment
  • Spark and compression ignition engines
  • Cooling and lubrication
  • Steering
  • Suspension
  • Braking systems
  • Electrical systems
  • Ignition systems on both petrol and diesel vehicles

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed by completion of module packs, two online examinations, workshop practical assessments and e-portfolio submission.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have GCSEs at grade 3 or above, in English and maths.

What are the course fees?

The total cost of this course is £994. You may be eligible for funding depending on your personal circumstances and subject to a fee assessment during the enrolment process. For further details, please visit our financial support pages.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Upon completion of this course, you could progress on to an electric/hybrid vehicle course or alternatively, you may choose to complete an apprenticeship to gain on-the-job experience.
