Apprentice builds a career in construction
Joinery apprentice, Lynn, proves that apprenticeships are an ideal training route for all ages and is encouraging aspiring apprentices to look beyond outdated stereotypes.
Lynn started her career as a Welder in her 20’s but had an 11-year career break to raise her children. She explained, “Now my youngest children are in school, I wanted to get back to doing what I love - working in a trade. I saw HMS had eight construction apprenticeship vacancies available including joinery, plastering, electrical and plumbing and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to be able to train in a new craft, whilst earning a wage and so I applied right away.”
HMS is one of the largest building and maintenance contractors in Merseyside. Since its inception in 2011, HMS has seen rapid growth and now employs just under 700 staff members, including 20 apprentices.
Lynn was invited by HMS to attend an apprenticeship recruitment and assessment day, held at St Helens College and was not sure what to expect, saying, “I was a little nervous before the assessment day, as a mature student at 40, I didn’t think I would be considered for an apprenticeship.”
Despite Lynn’s initial doubts, HMS were more than impressed with her ability and out of an impressive 800 applicants, Lynn was selected for one of the highly sought-after apprenticeship vacancies.
Now settled in her joinery apprenticeship, Lynn’s job role involves installing kitchens in tenant’s homes, with daily tasks including fixing cupboards and units on to walls, marking out worktops and fitting sinks and appliances.
Reflecting on her experience so far, Lynn said, “My apprenticeship is brilliant - I love getting up in the morning and coming into work as every day is different! The College is really supportive and the tutors are amazing and always happy to help.”
Speaking of the many benefits of an apprenticeship, Lynn confirms, “I would absolutely recommend an apprenticeship to others - you get paid to learn on-the-job, whilst working towards a qualification. I am learning so much from both my mentor at work and my tutors at College. This apprenticeship has given me a fantastic career opportunity in a diverse and exciting role.”
Looking to the future, Lynn is excited to continue her development within the company.
Having always had a passion for working with her hands, this apprenticeship has allowed Lynn to fulfil her dream and build a lifelong career in the construction industry.
