FdSc Exercise, Health and Fitness

"There are lots of level 3 PTs in the industry. The Exercise, Health and Fitness foundation degree took my skills and knowledge to a much higher level"

Mark HuntMany of us strive for job satisfaction as we hope to develop a career out of something that we are passionate about and this was the case for Mark Hunt. Mark had worked as a postman for over five years when he started training at his local gym and discovered a passion for fitness. He decided that he wanted a career in this industry and that his dream job would be a personal trainer.

Mark began his learning journey at University Centre St Helens by enrolling on a Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instruction before he progressed onto the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training. After successfully completing the Level 3 qualification, Mark’s new career was already beginning to develop as he applied for a vacancy as a fitness instructor at the College Gym and his application was successful.

After settling into his new job as a fitness instructor, Mark still had a desire to further develop his skills and knowledge. He decided to study on the Foundation Degree in Exercise, Health and Fitness at University Centre St Helens.

Mark demonstrated his commitment and determination to succeed and along with the support of his tutors, he successfully completed the Foundation Degree.
Mark says “Studying on the Foundation Degree was a significant step up from my previous qualifications but the tutors on the programme had an excellent teaching style and were very supportive. I found the modules really enjoyable and they enhanced my theoretical knowledge and practical skills.”

The standard of work that Mark produced on the second year of the Foundation Degree had given him confidence to progress onto the final year of the BSc (Hons) Exercise, Physical Activity and Health programme at the University of Salford.

Mark says “When I started the Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instruction, I never thought that I would end up studying on a degree programme. The experience and qualifications I have gained from University Centre St Helens have helped me to realise my dreams and I would recommend it to anyone looking to further their skills and career prospects.

Mark concludes "There are lots of level 3 PTs in the industry. The Exercise, Health and Fitness foundation degree took my skills and knowledge to a much higher level enabling me to offer a much higher standard of service to my clients."
