Three Games, Animation and VFX students were selected to take part in a three-day work placement with award-winning visual FX producer, Industrial Light and Magic.

A division of Lucasfilm, Industrial Light and Magic has produced visual effects and animation for a number of film and TV productions, such as The Batman, The Mandalorian and Avengers: End Game.

The three-day virtual placement, organised by NextGen Skills Academy, gave students a unique first-hand experience of visual effects and animation in practice.

They shadowed expert VFX coordinators, learning about ILM’s pipeline and creation process whilst developing a deeper understanding of the technical work that goes into creating dense digital environments and visual effects used in blockbuster productions like Spiderman: Far From Home and Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker.

Rob Hinde, Programme Leader in Games, Animation and VFX, said: “This is another big win for the Games, Animation and VFX students, who have already undertaken several work placements to date this year, both virtual and in person.

“It is so important for the students to interact with industry professionals as often as possible. The ability to ask technical, creative and sometimes personal questions and receive direct responses, and the prestige of the whole experience helps keep the students focused on their goal of breaking into the creative industries.”

Isaac, level 3 Games, Animation and VFX student, said: "The ILM work experience was a fantastic learning and social experience that gave me a great insight into the VFX industry. It was a surreal experience to learn directly from the talented artists that helped make some of my favourite pieces of media. I learned so much more about the VFX industry than I knew there was, and it made me very excited about a prospective career!"

If you want to follow in their footsteps, applications are still open to join us this September! Visit the dedicated Games, Animation and VFX course page.
