The Northwest is home to a growing digital arts industry and key production studios for animation, games production and cinema visual effects, which means big employers are always looking for fresh talent!

Based in our digital arts department, you will explore everything from character design, concept art and animation to digital painting and 3D modelling, enabling you to develop a diverse skill set to launch a successful career in the industry. 

You will benefit

At St Helens College, we offer a level 3 Extended Diploma, designed by leading industry partners such as Ubisoft, Sony, Framestore, Blue Zoo, Double Negative and Sega, that will enable you to develop technical, artistic and programming skills that are crucial to you launching your career. This course is also supported by NextGen Skills Academy, an organisation that works with leading employers in the exciting fields of games animation, and VFX to enable students to become the next generation of creators, entering companies with exactly the right skills and knowledge for the workplace.

We also offer a BA (Hons) degree at University Centre St Helens, validated by University of Chester, which has been developed and designed by game art experts, providing you with specialist training to become a professional 3D Games Artist, along with theoretical and core skills required for success in a modern, creative games studio.

Our experienced lecturers and tutors have previously worked with global companies on popular AAA game titles and are passionate about sharing their knowledge and industry links with you.

With this, you will have the opportunity to work on live briefs with local employers to build your work portfolio, receive masterclasses with visiting industry practitioners and gain a first-hand insight of this exciting and diverse industry. 

By using industry standard software such as Photoshop, InDesign, Unreal Engine, Autodesk Maya, Mudbox and AfterEffects, you will gain a competitive advantage over others when entering the industry.

The Northwest is an important centre for the game development industry and we have links with local industry, located centrally in a region that has a cluster of games companies.

In the last three years, graduates from our degree course have gained employment with Rebellion and Sony in Liverpool, Travellers' Tales in Knutsford and TT Fusion in Wilmslow.
