Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Engineering

Designed for students looking to launch a career in the engineering industry, this advanced course covers a wide range of industry areas such as engineering design, innovation and new technologies, civil engineering and robotics.

You will develop your knowledge and practical skills in our specialist workshops, covering a wide range of topics allowing you to experience the sectors skills requirements.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course will start in September and will take two years to complete.

This course will take place at our The STEM Centre, Technology Campus, Pocket Nook Street, St Helens, WA9 1TT.

What will I study?

You will study theory and apply them to practical tasks across the following units:

  • Engineering materials
  • Electronics, control and instrumentation
  • Mechanical structures and dynamics
  • Manufacturing methods in engineering
  • Engineering design
  • Engineering mathematics and statistics
  • Engineering workshop practice
  • Innovation and new technologies
  • Manufacturing engineering
  • Robotics and automated manufacture

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed by two external exams sat under exams conditions and two assignments.

Individual assessments will also take place throughout the year to help you develop your skills and knowledge.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have four GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and science and a grade 5 in maths.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2024), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

You could accrue up to 112 UCAS Tariff Points on successful completion of this course, to support you to progress on to university. You could choose to enhance your knowledge and skills by studying a HNC Engineering qualification at University Centre St Helens.

Alternatively, you may choose to look for employment in the industry or undertake a higher apprenticeship to gain further qualifications whilst earning a wage.

You could enter the industry into roles such as:

  • Aerospace manufacturing technician
  • Electronics manufacture technician
  • Product support engineer
