Preliminary Dog Grooming

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

If you spend time grooming your dog, or caring for canines, then dog grooming may be the profession for you.

This introductory course provides the basic knowledge and experience to get started on your journey towards a career in dog grooming. You will learn in a realistic dog grooming environment, using professional equipment and will be taught by an experienced professional Dog Groomer.

If you would then like to progress on to our Advanced Techniques in Dog Grooming course, this will develop your skills and provide you with further knowledge and experience to kick start your career, or to groom your own dogs as a hobby.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

We have various start dates throughout the year, both during the day and in the evening. The course will take 11 weeks to complete, however, we also have a fast track option available, which can be completed in 6 weeks.

The course takes place at St Helens College, STEM Centre Campus, St Helens, WA9 1TT.

What will I study?

During this course you will study a variety of different modules that will help you gain essential sector knowledge and skills.

You will study subjects such as:

  • Health and safety
  • Grooming equipment
  • Bathing
  • Grooming
  • Canine behaviour and restraint
  • Health checks
  • Skin and coat conditions
  • Grooming techniques
  • Basic clipping and scissoring

You will study alongside like-minded people in classes delivered by friendly supportive tutors.

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed through your practical course work, attendance and punctuality.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You do not need any formal qualifications, just passion and a commitment to your studies.

What are the course fees?

The total cost of this course is £650. To secure your place, you will need to pay a £200 deposit with the remaining balance payable upon enrolment. You can pay your deposit and reserve your place in our online shop.

This is a full cost course meaning that there are no fee discounts available.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Upon successful completion of this course, you may choose to seek employment or alternatively you may wish to further your knowledge by progressing on to our Advanced Dog Grooming course.

Many of our successful students have secured employment within the industry and have even gone on to run their very own dog grooming business/salon. Equally, many students join the course as a hobby.
