Level 1 Diploma in Animal Care

Do you have a real interest and passion for caring for animals? This course is a great introduction to the industry.

Handling a variety of animals in our indoor and outdoor animal units, you will complete a range of activities such as preparing food and maintaining animal accommodation.

You will also have the opportunity to complete a work placement to gain valuable experience while developing your CV and interview skills.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

This course will take place at our STEM Centre Campus, Pocket Nook Street, St Helens, WA9 1TT.

What will I study?

During this course you will gain an understanding of the various aspects of animal management through a number of units such as:

  • Introduction to animal care
  • Building confidence working with animals
  • Care of animals
  • Assisting with the care of animals
  • Handling animals
  • Assisting with the maintenance and cleaning of animal accommodation
  • Maintaining animal accommodation
  • Assisting with the maintenance and cleaning of animal accommodation
  • Developing your own interpersonal skills
  • Time management skills
  • Health and safety awareness in the working environment
  • Work-based placement
  • Creating a tailored CV
  • Interview skills

How is it assessed?

During your course, you will be assessed by a combination of workbook completion, practical observations, oral presentations and poster work.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have three GCSEs at grade 2 or above, including English, and have a passion and commitment to your studies.

Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. If you achieve below a grade 4 in your English and/or maths GCSEs at school, you will study it alongside your chosen course when you join us.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2024), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Once you have completed this course, you may have the opportunity to progress on to a level 2 qualification in Animal Care.

Alternatively, you could secure employment in a junior role within the industry.
