Picture from our Healthcare Science Skill Show

In support of Healthcare Sciences Week, St Helens and Knowsley Community College hosted a Healthcare Science Skills Show, which brought together healthcare professionals, industry experts and a number of regional universities, to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals.

The event saw over 250 young people from across the borough in attendance, where they received first-hand insight into how science and technology are vital in modern patient care, and the unlimited career opportunities available within the healthcare and science sector.

The students gained insight from some of the industry’s leading professionals, whilst taking part in a range of interactive activities and workshops, including using a real needle to take fake blood, seeing the inside of the body using an ultrasound machine and undertaking keyhole surgery on a training device by real surgeons.

Health and wellbeing organisations including St Helens and Knowsley NHS Trust, Medical Mavericks, University of Chester, Positively MAD, The University of Manchester, Edgehill University, National School of Healthcare Science, Open Awards and many more, were on hand to provide inspiring information and interactive activities.

Spotlight guest speaker Real Talk Theatre, reflected on the importance of mental health and its advancing appearance in the health industry and in our communities. They enacted engaging scenarios to help young people and adults think about and discuss mental health, by showing the impact the internet can have on our wellbeing and self-esteem.

Positively MAD also offered educational and highly motivational workshops, which aimed to help students with their self-motivation and goal-setting skills, through the use of mind management techniques to achieve success, relevant to their upcoming exams and revision.

The annual event, in its fourth year, proved to be a great success and left the students feeling motivated and enthusiastic about future career possibilities in such a fast-growing and important industry.
