Former hospitality student Alexandros Zervos returned to the College today to deliver a presentation to our current students!

Alex mused on his time at the College, taking the opportunity to thank his former tutors and Colours Restaurant staff for giving him the opportunity to work in the restaurant and develop his skills. He went on to explain the difference between the hospitality industries in the UK and in his homeland of Greece; one of the reasons he wanted to work in the UK is to work all year round, as in Greece he was used to working six months at a time during the tourism season with no days off.

Upon completing his course at College, Alex had the opportunity to work with Paul Askew, who offered him a position at The Art School Restaurant in Liverpool. Alex now works full time as a Chef De Rang at The Art School, taking pride in his work and his customer-focused attitude.

Alex also discussed the ways the COVID-19 pandemic affected his culinary journey, having returned to Greece in early 2020. In addition to his catering experience, Alex drew upon his experience in the armed forces, as he recently completed his national service in Greece. Students were entertained by his memories of serving food for generals and other forces officials; it is fair to say Alex’s experience has been varied and unique!

There was then an opportunity for students to ask questions, and Alex left them with some excellent advice; making others happy brings happiness back to you, which is why he always serves with a smile. Alex also encouraged the students to speak to as many people as they can, as you never know who may open the door to your next exciting opportunity. Alex knows first hand what this is like, having worked with 3-time Michelin-Starred chef Steven Doherty thanks impressing him during a chance meeting.

Many thanks to Alex for inspiring the next generation of students, and may we wish him the very best of luck with his Level 2 Wine Storage & Transport Certification he is due to complete in March!
