A Taste of Thailand

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

Thai cuisine places a real emphasis on lightly prepared dishes with strong aromatic components and is known for its balance of taste senses: sour, sweet, salty and bitter.

This fascinating course will help you develop your culinary skills and allow you to experiment with exceptional ingredients, to be able to prepare authentic, delicious Thai dishes.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course is due to start on Thursday 21st March 2024. You will attend college on Thursday evening from 6.00pm - 9.00pm, for one week.

The course takes place at St Helens College, Town Centre Campus, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

What will I study?

The course will provide you with new culinary techniques and present you with a range of recipes for Thai Main courses, Starters and Desserts.

Some of these dishes may include:

  • Chicken satay, peanut sauce, jasmine rice
  • Tom yum chicken soup
  • Thai red duck curry
  • Cardamom, coconut & mango créme brulee

The selection of ingredients used to produce these dishes will vary, from those used daily, to specialist products, including a wide range of spices, meat, fish, vegetables, sauces, fruit, nuts and pulses. Course participants will be able to develop their awareness of Health and Safety relating to the preparation of food, food safety awareness, practical knife skills and stove control, whilst learning logical and coherent methods for producing interesting Thai cuisine.

How is it assessed?

There is no formal assessment. The course is aimed to increase your own knowledge of the subject matter.

As with all of our leisure cookery courses, the main emphasis is to come along and enjoy.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

There are no formal entry requirements. The course is suitable for all levels of ability.

You will need to wear strong, flat sensible shoes and bring along an apron, tea towel, and an oven glove.

Please bring along a container to take what you have made home with you.

What are the course fees?

You may be eligible for Community Learning funding if you have not recently participated in a similar Community Learning programme, or received any other recent government funded training.

There are a number of fee options for this course including:

  • If you are unemployed - FREE
  • If you are employed - £40

The course price is inclusive of all of the ingredients that you will need for each session.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

You may wish to progress onto an accredited qualification in this subject, which will allow you to practice your skills in the industry.
