Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Makeup

This course explores all aspects of creative, theatrical media makeup from camouflage makeup, airbrushing and media makeup to styling and fitting postiches, applying prosthetic pieces and creating fantasy hair designs.

You will develop a wide range of technical abilities and skills in a busy, fast-paced environment while gaining crucial experience of working with theatre productions and professional clients in the industry.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

This course will take place at our Town Centre Campus, Water Street, St Helens, WA10 1PP.

What will I study?

During this course, you will cover the following:

  • Camouflage makeup
  • Displaying stock and promoting sales in a salon
  • Applying makeup
  • Designing and applying face and body art
  • Instruction on makeup application
  • Fashion and photographic makeup
  • Monitoring and maintaining health and safety practice in the salon
  • Media makeup
  • Client care and communication in beauty related industries

How is it assessed?

You will be assessed throughout the course by a combination of practical observations, written examinations, assignments, a reflective journal and participation within theatre productions.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have successfully achieved a level 2 Hair and Media Makeup qualification or equivalent.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2024), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Once you have successfully completed this course, you are now ready to enter the industry as a professional Theatrical Media Makeup Artist!

There are over 40,000 hairdressing, barbering and beauty businesses in the UK, which means there are plenty of career opportunities in this thriving industry.

Alternatively, you may choose to progress on to higher education to advance your skills and knowledge within a specialist area such as aesthetics.

Additional Information

As part of this programme, you are required to wear a uniform (tunic), which will be worn with black trousers or a skirt and a full black shoe. Our recommended uniform supplier is Florence Roby. There is also a kit required to complete your assessments which can be purchased from our recommended supplier, Dennis Williams. More information will be provided during the application process and you may be eligible for a bursary to cover these costs.
