Picture of our student George24-year-old Plumbing and Gas Engineering Apprentice, George, is making a great impression on his apprenticeship, having recently been selected to compete at the HIP Magazine Learner of the Year competition regional heat.

The competition searches for the best up-and-coming industry talent from level 2 and 3 Plumbing and Heating courses nationwide, competing against 11 other students from local colleges in the region.

Currently in the second year of this apprenticeship, George has been working incredibly hard alongside his employer, RGH Plumbing & Heating Ltd, impressing his tutors and employer by demonstrating the skills and knowledge he has learnt so far throughout his apprenticeship.

George's apprenticeship journey began when RGH Plumbing & Heating Ltd completed some work within his home. After discovering that the company were looking for a new apprentice, George took initiative and expressed his interest and was hired soon after.

As part of his apprenticeship, George attends St Helens College one day per week, developing his knowledge and working towards gaining a level 3 qualification, with the remaining four days spent gaining experience on-the-job, working across St Helens and Wigan.

Speaking about how an apprenticeship has benefitted him, he said:

I enjoy learning in a practical hands-on way, and I get to demonstrate what I have learnt in College in the workplace and vice versa.
My apprenticeship has given me confidence in my ability to learn and apply new skills in a meaningful way. I get a lot of satisfaction from doing a job well and seeing satisfied customers. Since starting my apprenticeship, I am a lot more confident and find it easier to interact with people.

George's Tutor, Chris, commented:

I am immensely proud of George. His work ethic both in college and out in the industry with his employer is impeccable. His knowledge and skills performed in the recent HIP Magazine Learner of the year 2023 Regional Heat were outstanding – he demonstrated what he is capable of, representing the college as one of the best within the North West.

Once George completes his apprenticeship, he hopes to start up his own plumbing and gas engineering business and would like to pay his experience forward, hiring an apprentice to work alongside him.

He added:

My apprenticeship is giving me a clear vision of how I can progress and has allowed me to believe in myself. In the future, I would love to offer someone the same opportunity of becoming an apprentice, working alongside me in my own business.
