Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating

This introductory course is the first step to a career as a successful Painter and Decorator.

You will learn about paint systems, application techniques, applying foundation and plain papers and decorative finishes.

Painting and decorating has fantastic job prospects and could provide you with a career for life.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

This course will take place at our STEM Centre Campus, Pocket Nook Street, St Helens, WA9 1TT.

What will I study?

During this course, you will cover the following:

  • Applying basic paint systems by brush and roller
  • Applying foundation and plain papers
  • Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
  • Knowledge of construction technology
  • Knowledge of technical information, quantities and communication with others
  • Preparing common surface types for decoration
  • Producing standard decorative finishes

In addition to this, you will have the opportunity to gain some work experience within the construction industry.

How is it assessed?

During this course, you'll be assessed by a range of practical and online assessments.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should have GCSEs at grade 3 or above, in English and maths.

Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. If you achieve below a grade 4 in your English and/or maths GCSEs at school, you will study it alongside your chosen course when you join us.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2024), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

This course is the first step towards becoming a successful Painter and Decorator.

You could progress on to the level 2 Technical Certificate in Painting and Decorating to enhance your skills and knowledge, or alternatively, you could secure an apprenticeship with an employer to earn whilst you learn.
